Introducing Betadia Brand Ambassador – Vanessa Low

Australian Paralympian Appointed As Betadia Brand Ambassador 2022/2023

Betadia has officially appointed world-renowned  Australian Paralympian Vanessa Low as its official brand ambassador for 2022/23. This came at a time when Betadia is aiming to further expand its global presence by positioning itself as a globally recognised international brand.

Born in Schwerin, East Germany on 17 July 1990, Low spent her childhood in the town of Ratzeburg. Upon reaching the age of 15, she was struck by an incoming train after losing her balance. As she recalls her memory, the train platform was much more crowded with passengers than usual that fateful day which forced her to walk through the huge crowd in order to reach the door of the train. Then all of a sudden, she lost her balance while she attempted to squeeze her way through the crowd causing her to stumble before falling onto the railway track with an incoming train that was travelling at high speed, leaving her unconscious after being knocked over.

This incident left her left leg severed while the other one was eventually amputated by doctors during a life-saving surgery. As a result of this tragic incident, she not only lost both her legs but also severely injured her head and back alongside broken bones with fractures across different parts of her body. Due to the injuries she sustained from the incident, she subsequently went into a state of coma for two months and spent the next two years relearning to walk using her prostheses after waking up.

As a long-time sports enthusiast, the accident posed a major challenge to Low as it left her unable to partake in sports for a considerable period of time. By the time she was discharged from the hospital, her muscles had depleted following a lengthy six-month stay at the hospital, leaving her with a weight of only 45kg.

Nevertheless, her incredible strength and resilience never stopped her from pursuing her dreams. Far from being devastated by her predicament, she took inspiration from American disabled long jumper Cameron Clapp to begin training in athletics in 2008 before making her senior sports debut the same year. Looking back at this chapter of her life, one cannot help but simply be amazed by the resilience of Low who managed to compete on the world stage after only a couple of years of training which was a remarkable feat that ordinary people could hardly achieve if they were to go through the same thing as Low.

Despite making her debut, it wasn’t a smooth start as she broke her elbow which forced her to pause her sports career for three months in 2009. Nonetheless, instead of being discouraged, she persevered and eventually won her first bronze medal while representing Germany in the T42 100m Sprint at the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships.

In 2012, she competed again under the German flag at the 2012 London Paralympic Games where she gained valuable sporting experiences that are instrumental in securing her outstanding results at a later stage of her sporting career despite missing out podium position in the two events she participated in.

As she further sharpened her skills and learned from her past experiences, 2016 finally witnessed an important milestone in her life when she scored a gold and silver medal at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games while representing Germany.

More recently in 2019, after she began representing Australia in international tournaments, Low won the gold medal in the Women’s Long Jump T61-63 at the 2019 World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai. A year later, just when she thought she had achieved her very best, she went on to break her own previous world record and won the gold medal in the women’s T63 long jump while competing for Australia at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Low’s success and outstanding achievements as a Paralympian despite her physical challenges strongly demonstrated the value of resilience, courage and perseverance in overcoming her life adversity and challenges, all of which are key values that are part of Betadia’s core company values. Most important of all, the courage that she took to withstand extreme difficulty and overcome the challenges standing in her way taught us to never give up when coming across obstacles in our lives.

This eventually prompted Betadia to choose Vanessa Low as it is deemed that her story will inspire others to overcome challenges to achieve new heights with an unstoppable spirit similar to Low. Therefore, after several extensive rounds of search where numerous influencers from various different backgrounds were reviewed, Low was selected to become Betadia’s Brand Ambassador for 2022. Among so many influencers who had been reviewed during the searching and subsequent selection process, Vanessa Low stood out as the best candidate and was, thus, selected as Betadia’s Brand Ambassador for 2022 and 2023.

In her own words, “Being a Paralympian is a little bit of a reminder that we sometimes need to focus more on what we have, rather than what we are lacking, or we feel like we are lacking. I really hope that people understand that you don’t have to achieve something amazing in order to be perfect the way that you are.”

Through this appointment, Betadia hopes that Low’s story can inspire many others to overcome life’s hardships and, more significantly, shed light on the need to improve the current welfare system to care and nurture talents among the differently-abled community.

Due to the unpredictability of life, insurance plays a vital role in securing the aspects of life, no matter if they are personal issues or investment ventures. Apart from allowing us to be better prepared for the unexpected, this enables us to tackle life’s challenges in a bold manner.
